"MythBusters: Don’t Believe Everything You Hear!" Expat Financial & Legal Seminar

Given the changes in tax codes (both in Costa Rica and the U.S.), filings required by the IRS, banking restrictions, etc. the Community Action Alliance has scheduled a seminar titled It's Your Money Honey: Changes in Taxes, Banking, & Investing to help clarify financial and legal obligations relating to these and other areas of importance to all of us.

We are pleased to announce that Roger Peterson, author of The Legal Guide to Costa Rica, which for many of us has proven to be one of the most valuable resources for navigating local laws will be presenting along with accounting specialist, Randall Zamora.

The goal of the seminar will be to alleviate any anxiety you may feel resulting from information you may be hearing about changes in Costa Rican laws and IRS reporting requirements.  We know that is a tall order however our hope is that by presenting two of the most qualified experts in Costa Rica on these matters we can clarify any questions you may have and help you better understand the process through which laws and tax codes are approved and implemented.  Based on the input we received from you we have compiled the following agenda:

AGENDA:

  1. General Overview - how laws and tax codes are legalized in Costa Rica: the legislative process, approval by Sala IV, implementation and enforcement
  2. Taxes on Corporations – how much is to be paid and to whom and when; active vs. non-active corporations; dissolving a corporation.
  3. Luxury Taxes – what are they; who must pay them; when; etc.
  4. Culture and Education Taxes – same as Luxury Taxes
  5. FACTA - What is FACTA (the Foreign Account Tax Compliance Act) and what impact does it have on U.S. Citizens living abroad?
  6. Bank Reporting – changes in IRS reporting requirements; who/what/when/where.
  7. Wiring Funds – changes in the amounts that can be wired before they are reported to the IRS; etc.
  8. DIMEX – what is this and what if anything do people need to do?
  9. License Plates – WTF?
  10. Q & A
