2023 was very good year from a sustainability standpoint and we are well positioned for 2024.
We ended 2023 with 90 members and so far for 2024, 53 members have renewed. Our membership dues of 5,000 colones per person per year is the main way we fund our operating budget, so if you need to renew or would like to become a member, please contact any member of the Board at Thursday morning coffee or a mixer. We would welcome your contribution and participation.
Based on fewer expenses incurred in 2023 than were budgeted for, we have twice what is needed to fund our 2024 operating budget and we have been able to put some excess cash in some short-term CDs to earn interest while it is not needed.
We have been able to continue making a difference in our community via our three philanthropic projects: Give the Gift of Education to Children in Poverty, Feed Hungry Families in San Ramón, and Brighten the Lives of Children in Poverty. Based on the generosity of members and friends we have been able to fund necessary budgeted expenses as they occur in the two children’s projects and to commit to making designated monthly contributions for food support in the three organizations we have chosen to help—Árbol de Esperanza, Funcavida, and Hogarcito. Our hope for 2024 is that current donors will continue to be generous and others will join them.
Our relationship with Global Giving continues to provide benefits in many ways. In addition to giving us a way to make online donating easy and secure, their periodic financial incentive programs offer encouragement for increased giving and support. In 2023, as a result of their Little by Little and Giving Tuesday incentive initiatives that were tied to CAA donors’ performance, Global Giving provided CAA with additional funds of almost $700 over and above what our donors actually contributed. In addition, in December we received a surprise donation of $1300 from the charitable foundation of a technology company unknown to us who found us on the Global Giving site. So increased exposure to non-CAA individuals and organizations is an additional benefit to being on the Global Giving platform.
We offer our thanks and sincere appreciation to all CAA members and friends who have helped us continue our initiatives to be a good neighbor and helper to those in need in our community.
